The United States government is providing substantial financial backing to advanced nuclear technology. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is preparing to allocate an additional $1 billion to X-energy for its collaborative nuclear project with Dow in Texas. This increase brings the total potential federal funding for the initiative to $2.15 billion since 2021.
X-energy CEO Clay Sell announced that the DOE communicated the additional funding through its Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program, which aims to transition next-generation reactors into commercial use. The new allocation maintains a 50/50 cost-share structure, requiring federal funds to be matched by private investment. Sell noted that the DOE grant represents X-energy’s primary source of revenue.
The project goes beyond a standard prototype. X-energy and Dow intend to implement the technology at Dow’s Seadrift petrochemical and plastics facility in Texas. The reactors will replace existing power and steam generation units to supply both electricity and industrial process steam. Sell indicated that this project is projected to be the first grid-scale advanced nuclear reactor utilized at an industrial facility in North America.
Dow and X-energy submitted their construction permit application to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission last year, with plans to begin operations in the early 2030s.
This federal investment underscores Washington’s commitment to transitioning advanced reactors into functional infrastructure. With up to $2.15 billion in public funds available alongside matching private capital, the Seadrift project serves as a key test of whether federal cost-sharing initiatives can successfully guide new nuclear technologies through the licensing, construction, and commercialization phases.
