**Emerson Secures BP Automation Contract for $2.9 Billion Shah Deniz Project**
BP has selected Emerson for a multi-million-dollar contract to supply advanced automation technologies for the $2.9 billion Shah Deniz Compression project in the Caspian Sea, offshore Azerbaijan. The initiative aims to boost gas recovery from the maturing field.
As the next phase of the Shah Deniz development, the compression project is designed to tap into lower-pressure gas reservoirs. It is projected to unlock approximately 50 billion cubic meters (Bcm) of additional natural gas and 25 million barrels (MMbbl) of condensate.
Emerson will deliver integrated control and safety systems for a new, electrically powered, normally unattended offshore compression platform. These technologies will manage process control, safety shutdowns, fire and gas detection, and power distribution, while facilitating fully remote operations.
The new platform will house four 11-MW compressors, acting as a centralized compression hub for gas extracted from the Shah Deniz Alpha and Bravo platforms. Operations will be managed remotely from BP’s onshore Sangachal terminal, located roughly 55 kilometers south of Baku.
Under the agreement, Emerson will supply its DeltaV Distributed Control System and DeltaV Safety Instrumented System. The company will also utilize cloud engineering and digital twin technologies to support virtual testing, system integration, and operator training.
“Emerson has served as the main automation contractor for the Shah Deniz development for over a decade,” said Ram Krishnan, chief operating officer of Emerson. “We are pleased to continue our collaboration with bp, deploying advanced systems to enable remote operations and significantly expand the production profile of Shah Deniz.”
This contract builds on Emerson’s long-standing partnership with BP in Azerbaijan, where it previously acted as the main automation contractor for both the Shah Deniz Stage 2 and the Azeri Central East projects.
Construction for the Shah Deniz Compression project is slated for completion in 2029. First gas compression from the Shah Deniz Alpha platform is projected to begin in 2029, with compression from the Shah Deniz Bravo platform following in 2030.
