Egypt is set to launch the initial phase of a major ocean bottom node (OBN) seismic survey across roughly 18,000 sq km of its Eastern Mediterranean waters within two weeks, according to Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi. The initiative aims to enhance natural gas exploration efforts in the region.
State-owned Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Co. (EGAS) is executing the project alongside a consortium comprising SLB and Viridien. Badawi noted that the technology will deliver higher-resolution imaging of subsea geological formations to pinpoint high-potential targets, with the broader objective of enticing foreign investment and accelerating exploration timelines.
This effort marks the first installment of a comprehensive seismic campaign designed to cover up to 95,000 sq km in the Eastern Mediterranean, establishing an expansive data foundation to evaluate Egypt’s untapped subsea hydrocarbon reserves.
