**Unity Launches Ultra-Compact ‘Qb’ BOP for Space-Constrained Well Intervention**
Aberdeen-based well integrity specialist Unity has introduced the “Qb,” an ultra-compact blowout preventer (BOP) valve engineered specifically for offshore environments with severe space limitations.
Rated to 10,000 psi, the new Qb valve is roughly one-third the width of standard BOP systems. It is designed to facilitate wireline, slickline, and coiled tubing operations, with future potential for drilling applications.
The technology utilizes a patented design where the rams rotate around a central cartridge inside the housing, rather than traveling in a straight line from opposing sides of the wellbore. Unity describes this mechanism as a hybrid between a traditional BOP and a ball valve, which significantly reduces the system’s physical footprint while maintaining full functionality.
The Qb delivers twice the pressure rating of Unity’s existing Compact Shear Sub (CSS) valve without increasing overall weight. It can be stacked in single, dual, or triple configurations to accommodate higher-pressure wells on space-constrained platforms.
Following a £500,000 research and development investment, the Qb expands Unity’s pressure-control portfolio beyond its traditional coiled tubing services.
“The future of well intervention will be defined by technologies that deliver more capability from a smaller footprint,” said Gary Smart, CEO of Unity. “We recognized that the size and complexity of conventional BOP systems were increasingly constraining operations in space-limited environments.”
The new Qb valve will complement Unity’s existing CSS valve, allowing the company to support a broader range of offshore intervention projects.
