According to Enverus Intelligence Research (EIR), drilling inventory in the Anadarko basin grew 37% year over year to 8,055 gross operated locations. At $60/bbl oil, the basin delivers some of the best full-cycle economics among key Lower 48 plays.

The addition of 2,175 locations stems from enhanced development economics throughout the region, particularly within the Merge, Cherokee, and Northwest areas. EIR highlighted 1,554 sites that achieve half-cycle breakeven prices under $50/bbl WTI at a 10% discount rate (PV-10).
Private companies hold a growing footprint in the play, commanding roughly 70% of the gross operated drilling inventory. Conversely, public producers have seen their share of operated output drop from nearly 50% in 2020 down to 25%. These metrics illustrate distinct aspects of market dynamics, as inventory allocation highlights future drilling capacity rather than present output volumes.
M&A activity in the Anadarko basin has surpassed $4 billion year to date as companies seek strategic assets to broaden their operational footprints. Backed by a growing inventory base and sustained capital deployment, EIR forecasts basin production to expand by 15% through 2030.
Ryan Hill, principal analyst at EIR and the report’s author, noted that corporate consolidation, expanding location counts, and private funding are key drivers of the basin’s future. The results emphasize that acquisition costs and project returns remain critical as operators assess opportunities across the Lower 48.
