According to the latest report from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), US working natural gas inventories experienced a net build of 32 billion cubic feet (Bcf) for the week ending July 17, 2026.
Total working gas in underground storage rose to 3,056 Bcf. While this inventory level is 16 Bcf (0.5%) lower than the same period last year, it remains comfortably within the historical five-year range and stands 183 Bcf (6.4%) above the five-year average of 2,873 Bcf.
### Regional Breakdown
* **East:** Inventories climbed by 17 Bcf to 631 Bcf, representing a 2.4% increase over the five-year average, though slightly below (-0.3%) last year’s level.
* **Midwest:** Stocks rose by 17 Bcf to 766 Bcf, which is 3.0% higher than last year and 5.9% above the five-year average.
* **Mountain:** Levels held steady with no net change, remaining at 240 Bcf. This is 0.8% higher than last year and 19.4% above the five-year average.
* **Pacific:** Stocks decreased by 5 Bcf to 314 Bcf. Despite the weekly drop, inventories are 5.7% higher than last year and 18.9% above the five-year average.
* **South Central:** Overall stocks in the region ticked up by 2 Bcf to 1,105 Bcf.
* *Salt facilities* saw a decrease of 7 Bcf, bringing inventories to 317 Bcf (10.1% above the five-year average).
* *Nonsalt facilities* gained 9 Bcf, rising to 788 Bcf (0.8% above the five-year average).
* The total region is 4.7% below last year’s levels but 3.4% above the five-year average.
Overall, national storage levels remain healthy, with nearly all regions tracking above their five-year historical averages.
