Driven by expanded oil and gas production and significantly higher refining margins, Italian energy company Eni experienced a 125% surge in third-quarter earnings, prompting an increase in investor payouts through share buybacks and a special dividend.
For the third quarter, Eni reported an adjusted net profit of $3.14 billion (€2.8 billion)—more than double the earnings from the same period last year. This figure surpassed market expectations of $2.8 billion (€2.5 billion). Key drivers behind the growth included a 4% rise in oil and gas production, a 30% increase in operational cash flow, and improved pricing realizations.
The company’s refining and chemical sector reversed previous losses, generating $529 million (€472 million) in quarterly earnings. Eni attributed these gains to higher facility utilization rates, although performance was somewhat tempered by elevated shipping expenses and wider price spreads between heavy/sour and light/sweet crude grades.
Refining margins grew significantly during the period. The Standard Eni Refining Margin reached $28.1 per barrel in Q3, up from $8.9 per barrel during the same quarter of the prior year and $8.3 per barrel in Q2. For the first nine months of the year, average refining margins tripled to $15.5 per barrel, compared to $5.8 per barrel in the previous year.
Supported by these financial results and an improved cash flow forecast for the remainder of the year, Eni announced a total special dividend distribution of $1.46 billion (€1.3 billion) scheduled for December. Additionally, the firm raised its full-year share repurchase target by 12%, bringing the total buyback plan to $4.26 billion (€3.8 billion). This adjustment marks the third upward revision to the company’s share buyback initiative within the year.
Looking ahead, Eni expects strong operational trends and favorable commodity prices to continue delivering solid financial performance through the end of the year. Other major European energy producers, such as TotalEnergies, Shell, and BP, are similarly anticipated to report elevated third-quarter results driven by high refining margins and trading activity.
