(Oil & Gas 360) – The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has finalized a new measure enabling developers of commercial nuclear reactors to integrate technical data from federal demonstration initiatives directly into their license applications. This regulatory shift aims to eliminate redundant evaluations and expedite the deployment of next-generation nuclear technology.
Issued on October 22, the ruling permits applicants to use engineering reports, experimental data, and analytical models established through reactor demonstration initiatives sponsored by the Department of Energy or the Department of War.
While the NRC will still carry out its own safety evaluations, applicants remain responsible for proving that their commercial designs meet all relevant safety and operational standards.
This action marks the initial major reactor regulation completed in accordance with Executive Order 14
