TotalEnergies and Mistral Partner to Deploy AI in Oil and Gas Exploration

TotalEnergies and Mistral AI have embarked on a three-year, $115 million (€100 million) joint venture to build custom artificial intelligence models tailored for the upstream oil and gas sector.
The initiative will merge TotalEnergies’ vast repository of subsurface data and nearly 100 years of geological and reservoir engineering knowledge with Mistral’s advanced AI technologies, including agentic AI. The goal is to design specialized AI models that can process massive amounts of geological data to simulate various exploration scenarios, optimize field development, and prolong the lifespan of active production sites.
To drive this project, the two companies are establishing a joint scientific laboratory where TotalEnergies’ geoscientists will work alongside Mistral’s AI engineers to build proprietary digital tools.

This new program deepens an ongoing partnership between the two companies as TotalEnergies continues to integrate AI across its technical and industrial operations.
