Woodside Energy was forced to halt pre-commissioning activities at its offshore Scarborough gas platform in Western Australia after Greenpeace activists boarded the facility.
In a public statement, Australia’s largest natural gas exporter condemned the intrusion, noting that Greenpeace’s actions resulted in a major, costly, and unnecessary disturbance. The company added that it fully backs rigorous enforcement of the law by local authorities.
According to Greenpeace, activists spent Saturday night on the platform, with two demonstrators establishing temporary hanging tents while two others retreated to the *Rainbow Warrior*. In a subsequent update, the environmental group confirmed that the two protesters who remained on the structure were arrested by police on Sunday afternoon.
Greenpeace maintains that the Scarborough development poses serious risks to surrounding marine habitats and will significantly increase global greenhouse gas emissions.
Despite the disruption, Woodside’s online updates indicate that the Scarborough project has reached 98% completion and remains on schedule to ship its initial liquefied natural gas cargo during the fourth quarter.
