SLB has introduced two new artificial lift technologies designed for U.S. land operations to enhance equipment durability and boost production in mature, challenging wells.
The first innovation, Harbison-Fischer Deka diamond technology, features a proprietary diamond-based coating for rod pump barrels. Engineered to withstand highly abrasive and corrosive conditions, Deka minimizes wear between the plunger and the barrel. This increased durability extends the lifespan of the equipment, reducing the frequency of costly well interventions and replacements. According to SLB, testing shows the technology provides superior abrasion resistance compared to traditional barrel coatings.
The second innovation is the Synthetix hydraulic gas lift system, which utilizes hydraulically actuated downhole valves to enable surface-level control of gas injection. This allows operators to adjust to changing well conditions without the need for slickline interventions or workovers. Additionally, the system permits switching between tubing and annular flow configurations directly from the surface. Because it relies on a hydraulic architecture, it eliminates the need for downhole electrical infrastructure. In field applications, including mature and low-pressure wells, Synthetix has boosted production efficiency by 10% to 20%.
“Artificial lift performance increasingly depends on extending equipment life while giving operators greater control over changing well conditions,” said Josh Jones, SLB’s VP of Production Systems North America Land. “Deka technology addresses wear at the material level, while the Synthetix system enables operators to adjust gas lift performance from the surface without an intervention.”
Together, these technologies expand SLB’s artificial lift offerings for the U.S. land market, with Deka targeting rod-pump reliability and Synthetix offering surface-controlled optimization for gas-lift operations.
